LAWA has proactively improved its water use efficiency over the past several years, resulting in a steady decline of potable water use per passenger

LAWA continues to aggressively implement actions to further reduce potable water consumption, including discontinuing irrigation in non-public areas, developing plans to install 2,800 feet of pipeline for reclaimed water, and using recycled water for dust control during construction. LAWA continues to identify sites for conversion to reclaimed water and to evaulate aggressive water conservation options.

Performance Summary

LAX has 107 acres of landscaped areas. In 2015, LAWA used reclaimed water to irrigate 50 percent of this area.

The installation of new fixtures has improved potable water use efficiency in the LAX terminals by saving an average 1.25 gallons per flush. This translates to a 22 percent reduction of potable water use per unit.

Theme Building Landscaping Undergoes Major Renovation in a Creative Effort to Save Water

Mayor Eric Garcetti, in an Executive Directive issued in October 2014, said, “Water is our most precious resource. With the drought now in its third year, we must be creative about the ways in which we conserve water.

In response to the Mayor’s directive and to thoughtfully respond to the drought Los Angeles World Airports has developed a number of water-wise projects. The latest of the Phase 1 projects was completed at one of the most iconic and well-known locations in the City of Los Angeles - the grounds of the LAX Theme Building. Approximately 30,000 square feet of turf have been replaced, resulting in a savings of more than 1.5 million gallons of water per year.
