Terminals 7 & 8
In early 2019, more than $546 million in modernization work was completed in Terminals 7 and 8, home to United Airlines. This modernization included refreshment of nearly all of the public spaces and consolidation of four Transportation Security Administration screening checkpoints into one 12-lane location, featuring the first Automated Screening Lanes at LAX. The project, which was the first upgrade at Terminals 7 and 8 since 1998, encompassed 700,000 square feet of existing space, as well as the addition of 20,000 square feet for a United Club lounge on a new fourth level of Terminal 7.
Features include:
- An expansive check-in lobby that maximizes use of incoming light and incorporates the latest self-service tools, including self-tagging baggage kiosks
- Remodeled boarding gate areas that feature a modern design, including a variety of comfortable seating options and numerous charging stations for guests’ electronic devices
- All public restrooms now have environmentally efficient fixtures
- Existing Checked Baggage Inspection System replaced with a new efficient, high-speed system
Additional benefits include:
- Passengers who have already checked in online are able to exit vehicles at the curb and proceed directly to security via a shorter, more efficient route
- The reconfigured gates can accommodate 19 narrow- and wide-body aircraft
- New carousels in the revamped baggage claim area make baggage pick-up more efficient
- United Club members enjoy the airline’s new larger Terminal 7 lounge with an outdoor terrace, where they can work or relax while taking in spectacular views
The work was completed by Hensel Phelps, with HNTB serving as the designer.
